BACKGROUND

HELP US SHAPE THE FUTURE OF SEVEN MILE BEACH

Following on from the community consultation around the Seven Mile Beach Local Area Plan, Clarence City Council is undertaking a second round of community consultation to gain further understanding of the issues and experiences of Seven Mile Beach residents.

Council held a successful community drop-in session on 29 July, at Wyndham Resort, Seven Mile Beach to allow residents to share their experiences and engage with our experts. Over 80 residents came and shared issues and ideas.

The community survey stayed open until the 14 August and we heard from another 53 residents. The below topics were the focus of the survey.

Seven Mile Beach Local Area Plan

The consultation for the draft Seven Mile Beach Local Area Plan will inform the ongoing placemaking and public realm strategies for Seven Mile Beach, with a strong emphasis on protecting and enhancing special qualities of the town valued by the local community. Next Steps: the conversations and survey results will feed into any final changes before this is taken to council for endorsement.

Stormwater Management Plan

Council understands stormwater, surface water and climate change inundation hazards continue to be major areas of concern within Seven Mile Beach. Technical studies and the previous stage of community consultation has driven the need for solutions to be determined. Council is seeking to engage the community to increase our understanding of the situation and help inform our future planning. Next Steps: a draft Stormwater Management Plan will be shared with the community for feedback when it's drafted, Timing for this will be shared closer to the date.

Seven Mile Beach Urban Tree Strategy

The Seven Mile Beach Tree Strategy is new element to be added to the consultation, considering how we might work with the local community to increase the number of trees, on both public and private land, in a coordinated way. Trees, habitat, and a strong overall appreciation of the natural landscape of Seven Mile Beach was another key topic of feedback in the previous stage of consultation for the Local Area Plan. Council understands the community concern over loss of significant canopy trees. Trees also play a positive role in managing the water table and provide shade and cooling.

HOW YOU CAN BE INVOLVED

Clarence City Council wants to hear from the Seven Mile Beach community to help shape the future of the area. Consultation will be open from 18 July to 14 August 2023, with multiple ways to provide information and feedback to our team.

UPDATE STAGE 1 - previous stage

The Seven Mile Beach Local Area Plan Consultation Summary is now available to read in the document library. We had fantastic engagement throughout the consultation period, with 393 responses, 77% of which were residents within the study area.

How was stage 1 communicated back to the community and key stakeholders?

The report and consultation outcomes have been shared on the Your Say Page, as well as a post on council’s website, Facebook (including the community Facebook page) and Eastern Shore Sun.

What next for the project?

The Local Area Plan has now been prepared by the consultants and reviewed by Council officers. The Draft Local Area Plan has also been presented to Council at a council workshop. Community consultation for Stage 2 is the current stage.

ORIGINAL BACKGROUND

The Southern Tasmania Regional Land Use Strategy (STRLUS) identifies the existing Seven Mile Beach area within the Urban Growth Boundary (UGB), as a minor satellite seaside commuter settlement of Greater Hobart. There are important planning considerations concerning the form and growth of the settlement and how its community is serviced.

Council is undertaking consultation with the community as part of a key input into the preparation of a Local Area Plan for the sustainable growth and management of Seven Mile Beach, including protection and enhancement of the special qualities of the area values by its local community.

These questions are split amongst key structure planning considerations that we expect will form the body of the report.

We are interested in your opinions on existing features and values within Seven Mile Beach, as well as your thoughts and aspirations for the future development to be included in the Local Area Plan.
