Rokeby Kayak Launch Point Consultation

Update

The consultation is now closed and the feedback report is in the documents folder or click here. We heard from 58 community members and there was strong overall support (over 8 in 10) for the launch point. Thank you to everyone who contributed detailed constructive feedback, the survey responses and submissions we received will be used to finalise the plan.

Background

Clarence City Council is looking upgrade the Rokeby Kayak Launch Point to improve access to our award-winning Clarence Kayak Trail.

The Rokeby Beach Kayak Launch Point is a key launch site identified in the award-winning Clarence Kayak Trail (brochure). The Clarence Kayak Trail Strategy identified an 8-stage kayak trail around the Clarence coastline grading in skill level from basic to intermediate and advanced. Rokeby Beach is the start or end point of 3 popular kayak trails that explore the Clarence Coastline via Ralphs Bay. The popularity of kayaking for recreation or fitness/racing has expanded rapidly in Hobart, along with demand for safe launching sites. Enhancing existing sites with safe and universal access along with improved amenity of the sites is important for the overall success of each site.

Feedback from the Clarence Plains Master Plan (see related project for more detail on this plan) identified that work was required to improve Rokeby Beach to make the site more appealing, accessible and functional for the community. This project will see the upgrade of the existing launch facilities including installation of kayak and small watercraft washdown facilities, as well as associated landscaping and infrastructure including seating, bins and water connections to improve the site for community use.

We want to hear from you to ensure that we are meeting the needs of the community and key users.

More about the Clarence Kayak Trail

Our Clarence Kayak Trail is supported with a waterproof/tear-proof brochure folded to A5 size that provides eight maps of coastal paddles around Clarence for beginners through to advanced kayakers. The publication gives highlights for each map and descriptions of potential hazards and includes a paddlers checklist and safety information.

In a first for Tasmania, the Clarence Kayak Trail brochure provides information to help kayakers plan their trip and make the best decision about where to go.

The trail is divided into nine coastal sections to explore from Risdon through to South Arm. Each trail includes information about the estimated distance and skill level required, what to see along the way, launch points, hazards and warnings, and facilities to access off the trail.

The kayak trail was created following extensive consultation with kayak groups who identified the routes and the level of difficulty required.

We look forward to hearing what you think!
