Lauderdale Canal Park Draft Master Plan

This consultation is now under review.

Project overview

We are undertaking community consultation on the draft master plan for the upgrade of the public open space facilities at Lauderdale Canal.

We are seeking community review and comment on the proposed public open space design, layout and features to ensure they meet the needs of all users of Lauderdale Canal park.

The main aim of this consultation is to seek community feedback and ideas on the draft master plan. This feedback will then be used to refine the design into a final master plan for council consideration.

Funding for the construction of the master plan is currently not allocated and detailed documentation and costing will need to be undertaken prior to consideration of funding in any future council budget.

Background

The existing layout and features of Lauderdale Canal are the result of a master plan that was completed in 1997 and implemented by council over subsequent years. Features of the park such as the pedestrian bridge, skate park and eastern picnic area are a result of the implementation of the 1997 master plan.

Over the past 20 years, Lauderdale Canal has continued to be a valuable public open space asset for the local community and attracts a diverse mix of users. Residential growth in Lauderdale and surrounding areas has increased the demand on the park, picnic, play and passive recreation facilities at the canal.

Currently, many of the park features such as the picnic facilities and playground are due for upgrade and renewal. This presents an opportunity for the development of a new master plan to guide the park’s renewal.

In 2019, council directed staff to develop a draft master plan for the upgrade of all features and facilities at Lauderdale Canal to a high quality, district level of service. The proposed upgrades will ensure the public open space at Lauderdale Canal meets and exceeds the community’s needs now and into the future.

The Lauderdale Canal Draft Master Plan is available for download in the document library. The draft master plan uses a key and legend to explain all the proposed key features of the park.
