Have your say on council’s Richmond Streetscape Project.

Richmond Bridge (1823) and Village (1824) will be celebrating their bicentenary year in 2023/24 and in recognition of this milestone, Clarence City Council is launching its Richmond Streetscape Project.

The term streetscape is used to describe the natural and built elements of a street. Streetscapes can have a significant influence on public spaces, impacting an area’s visual appeal, economic activity, health, and long-term sustainability.

The goal of the project is to undertake works to enhance Richmond’s streetscape and public spaces to improve amenity for residents and visitors, while also ensuring the heritage value and history of the village remains intact.

To initiate the project, we are seeking input from the community on what can be improved in the Richmond Village and Bridge Street areas. Feedback received during this first stage will be used in the development of a master plan for the area, which will then be released for further consultation.

Background

Built in 1823, Richmond Bridge is Australia’s oldest working bridge and is listed on the national heritage register. Richmond Village was established in response to this construction and included the housing of convict labour nearby at Richmond Gaol, which is now one of the area’s key tourist destinations.

Over the years, Bridge Street has been used as a road linking Hobart to Sorell and Campania, which has resulted in heavy vehicle traffic use. Bridge Street's change from a main road to a local road after the construction of the bypass (Colebrook Road) led to the Department of State Growth transferring ownership to Clarence City Council.

Council officers have identified Bridge Street and the Village Green as a key project in response to its changing uses, increased tourism numbers, road and pedestrian safety issues, connectivity and wayfinding challenges.

The project site will include Bridge Street – which runs from Richmond Bridge and the Wellington Street intersection through to the Colebrook Road Bypass – as well as parts of Franklin Street, the Franklin Street Carpark, Forth Street and the Village Green.

    Survey - Richmond Streetscape Project

    This survey asks questions around demographics, streetscape and amenity in Bridge Street and the Village Green, Richmond. 

    It will take approximately five to 10 minutes to complete.
