Project Overview
The Howrah Community Centre seeks to begin a much needed redesign of the building in order to improve circulation, wayfinding, increase the number of leasable spaces and to breathe new life into existing facilities.
The aim of this consultation is to obtain feedback on a draft redesign plan on the centre from its members, users and the general public prior to putting a submission before the council for the various approvals to implement the plan.
Project Information
The Howrah Community Centre is a recreation sports and activities centre, which hosts a range of activities for the community. It is run by a management committee made up of one member from each affiliated organisation, one member from the centre members’ group, one member from the user's group, an alderman and a council officer. Management committees are appointed as Special Committees of Council under the provisions of Section 24 of the Local Government Act 1993.
The Clarence City Council has appointed Preston Lane Architects to provide a redesign of the Howrah Community Centre's layout. The draft plan can be viewed by downloading the file in the document library located on the left side of this page.
The redesign will be staged and is subject to approval from council and budgetary considerations.

Hi I would just like to reiterate what has been said below and make it clear this ‘disused exterior space’ is anything but disused and has a special place in many young girls hearts! Please consider the joy this place regularly brings to the local community before proceeding with the project :)
I would like to ask a Girl Guide parent that the area marked as ‘disused exterior space’ remain as it is for the use and enjoyment of our Girl Guides. It is a safe outdoor area that is used on a weekly basis for the girls to learn gardening skills, do small group activities while remaining away from the busy car park. The girls have a sense of pride and achievement Knowing that they each played a part in making the space a usable and happy environment and it should continue to be used by all of our present and future Guides. To lose this outside space without gaining another safe exterior zone would be a real detriment to our girls.
On the proposed design there is a “disused exterior space” proposed to be meeting rooms/training room.
I want to inform you that as Girl Guides use this space weekly, it is certainly still in use. After a lot of time and effort it has been made into a safe and educational space. It gives a general hang out area, with the alternative being a busy car park. As well as a garden, worm farm, and a beautiful mural displaying an essence of guiding. On this mural names are displayed for those who have achieved guiding achievements. I believe it gives an incredible sense of community, built by a community itself. It would be an absolute shame if this space was lost for the girls.
